Summer Internship
The Bank Internship offers highly motivated and successful individuals an opportunity to improve their skills while working in a diverse environment. Interns generally find the experience to be rewarding and interesting.
To be eligible for the Internship, candidates must possess an undergraduate degree and already be enrolled in a full-time graduate study program (pursuing a Master`s degree or PhD with plans to return to school in a full-time capacity).
Generally, successful candidates have completed their first year of graduate studies or are already into their PhD programs. The program has an application period that is already active and closes on January 31st. The internships are paid positions and would be 6 - 8 weeks in length starting after June 1st but ending by August 31st. The start date is flexible but must be in that date range.
Internship Expectations
ITS Knowledge & Information unit would like a summer intern with knowledge of records management and who is interested in pursuing a career in the field of records management, archives or digital preservation. During the 6 – 8 week internship the selected candidate will explore and document the landscape of born-digital Geographic Information System (GIS) records at the World Bank and its impact on records management, obtain a deeper understanding of World Bank projects in China and participate in hands on digitization and organization of World Bank archival photos.
The World Bank has two official repositories governed by records management software and managed by systems administrators so that they conform to the Records Retention and Disposition Schedules and various other policy documents. One of the repositories we maintain is called ImageBank. ImageBank contains citations to 190,000 World Bank Group reports produced between 1946 and the present. The types of documents you will find include:
-Economic & Sector work (in-depth background, strategic priorities, and direction for lending activities)
-Country Focus reports (country assistance strategies, poverty reduction strategies...)
-Project Documents (reports produced in the course of the project cycle, including legal agreements)
-Publications & Research (working papers & informal series from departments around the Bank)
Specific Duties
·Chinese documents in ImageBank: Most of the reports contain the full text of the report in digital format, which can be downloaded or printed locally. There are 1350 Chinese documents in ImageBank, many with abstracts or metadata only in English. The intern would be expected to review the reports and draft an abstract/metadata in Chinese. Together with staff from the Beijing office the abstracts would be vetted and approved for final posting into ImageBank.
·Born-Digital Geographic Information System Records: The intern would be expected to explore and document the landscape of born-digital Geographic Information System (GIS) currently in use across the organization based on a combination of known inventories and interviews with business owners. These would then be compared against the relevant records schedules, evaluation rules and standard criteria. Together with the Appraisal Archivist, identify and recommend which social media channels containing records should be scheduled for permanent retention, and suggest mechanisms for their targeted acquisition and preservation, as appropriate.
·World Bank Archives Photographs: Many photographs in the custody of the World Bank Group Archives have been digitized in response to requests by clients of the Archives, as well as to support internal initiatives. In addition, many born-digital photographs have been transferred into an Audio/Visual repository. In both cases, these photographs often do not retain sufficient metadata to support easy discovery and reuse. The intern would be expected to collaborate with archives staff to organize, identify and populate metadata for photos as they are moved into an image-management system.
At the end of the internship the selected candidate will be expected to provide a half hour presentation on the experience which would include recommendations for improving our services and processes.
Anyone selected will be expected to follow all Bank AMS policies including AMS10.11 Management of Records and AMS6.21 Information Classification.
