The Director of our Division got 6 interns to work within the Archives and Records Management Section starting from October 2014. They are working full time for a period of 6 months. One is originally from Poland. The other 5 interns are from Austria, Chile, Cyprus, Kenya, and Switzerland.
For now we don`t know if the internship programme will continue beyond the 6 months that we have. Unfortunately for our institution, the requirement at this point is to have interns for a long period of time.
Internships in international organizations is an opportunity. My advice was that
a) a number of international organizations (like the International Monetary Fund, International Atomic Energy Agency and the United Nations) usually have internship opportunities but they are for at least 3 months or longer;
b) Most of these international organizations will not sponsor the travel costs or visa application fees for the interns so interns have to sponsor themselves
c) Most interns will also not receive any payment. At the IAEA they receive a small stipend but it is merely to help them cover part of their accommodation costs.
d) Most international organizations will want to choose the interns they want from a list which means that even though interns apply, it is likely that they are not chosen.
Therefore if a university wanted to send one or two specific interns for a period less than 3 months, the best thing would be to sponsor these students and bring them as visitors rather than official interns.
Respond to the questions:
a) I can’t say how many students are expected because we still do
not have approval yet. For now we need to have either students or recent graduates applying so that they are in a group where the best candidate is chosen
b) I also can’t say what kind of work they will do because we
still do not have approval yet. However, we will be proposing archives processing work (generating inventories, series level description and item level description etc)
c) It is not ARMS that provides a stipend but the IAEA through its internship programme. The amount could be between 100 and 900 Euros a month. The city of Vienna tends to be expensive but some interns I have seen in other departments such as nuclear energy
(http://www.iaea.org/About/Jobs/ne.html) and technical cooperation
(http://www.iaea.org/About/Jobs/tc.html) who tell me that the amount they get is enough to pay for their living costs.
As the website shows http://www.iaea.org/About/Jobs/internships.html,applicants can apply up to two years after they have graduated.
For anyone to be considered in this competitive process they have to fill the online form and include two signed letters of recommendation (as stated on http://www.iaea.org/About/Jobs/internships.html )
