International Conference on Digital Archival Resources (ICDAR)
– Enhancing public services via integration and innovation
June 6- 7, 2015, Beijing, China
“The International Conference on the Integration of Digital Archival Resources (ICDAR):Enhancing Public Services via Integration and Innovation” will be held at Beijing, China, between June 6-7, 2015. The conference is organized by the National Social Science Foundation Major Project in China entitled as “Novel Mechanisms for the Integration of National Digital Archival Resources for Their Optimal Utilization”, The School of Information Resources Management at Renmin University of China (RUC) and the Data Engineering and Knowledge Engineering Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education (RUC) of China will host the conference at the RUC campus. The Society of Chinese Archives, the Technology Division of the State Archives Administration of People’s Republic of China and the Electronic Records Management Center of Renmin University of China will be the partners to support the conference.
ICDAR 2015 provides an international forum for academics and practitioners from around the world to exchange ideas and insights, to stimulate discussions, and to share experiences and research findings in the area of digital archival resources for enhancing the public services through integration and innovation.
Contributions covering the theoretical developments and practical applications, including but not limited to the following areas, are invited.
1. Core concepts and fundamental principles
Digital archival resources are evidences, memories, assets and identities of a community connecting past to present and present to future. Integrating digital archival resources for their optimal utilization is increasingly playing a critical role in human’s endeavourers to move to the paperless office and to improve our digital lives and online culture. To face the challenges of the digital transition which is happening in the 21st century, a complete rethinking of the archival theories and principles in today’s challenging world is critical. In this regard, the following issues are suggested for discussion.
a. Understanding the core concepts of integrating digital archival resources for their optimal utilization;
b. Exploring the perspectives, paradigms and fundamental principles for integrating digital archival resources for their optimal utilization.
2. Collaborative innovation mechanisms
As our societies are confronting an ever increasing information convergence and the complexity of information utilization, identifying the critical factors for the integration of digital archival resources and understanding the mechanisms for their optimal utilization are critical. There is an urgent need to develop coherent frameworks for collaborative innovations across inter-disciplinary fields for the provision of better public services, with strong symbiotic relationships between social informatics, recordkeeping, and archival access. In this aspect, the following issues are suggested for discussion.
a. Investigating the critical factors for the integration of digital archival resources for their optimal utilization;
b. Identifying the collaborative innovation mechanisms and models for the integration of digital resources for their optimal utilization.
3. Approaches to cyber-infrastructure building
To support the integration of digital archival resources for their optimal utilization, integrating technological and sociological solutions to adequately address the problem of efficiently connecting people, processes, systems and practices and effectively aggregating software, hardware and technologies together is critical. To adequately deal with the uncertainty of interconnecting the cyber-infrastructure while ensuring the security of the digital archival resources, the following issues are suggested for discussion.
